  Blagdon Lake
Often referred to as the birth place of still water trout fishing, Blagdon Lake has been open for fishing for over one hundred years. Its 440 acres are, to many, the perfect trout fishery. Nestling under the Mendip Hills its mature plantations and picturesque surroundings make fishing a wonderful experience. Add to that the superb trout reared and stocked by Bristol Water and you have a recipe for a memorable day. With its many bays and points Blagdon offers first class bank fishing for much of the seven mile perimeter. To explore the more inaccessible areas a boat is the answer - no noisy petrol engines - just peace, quiet and screaming reels! (18 rowing boats are available for hire. You may bring your own electric engine. Advance booking is recommended).

Blagdon, famous for the 'Blagdon Boil', produces large hatches of sedge & buzzer and contains plenty of other aquatic life in its rich waters. The Lake is relatively shallow, averaging only 14 feet deep and only 42 feet deep at its deepest point near the dam (west end of the lake). Travel its long narrow length to the east and you come to the shallowest end of the lake where the River Yeo enters. In between there are many superb fishing areas - Bells Bush, Pegs Point, Rainbow Point, Ash Trees, Rugmoor, Green Lawn, all waiting for you to cast your flies and tempt that waiting specimen. All methods work on the Lake but many locals and experts stick to small flies and nymphs fished slowly on or near the surface. In the early season and the dying days of the year lures and sinking lines can be effective, but it is the patterns that imitate the naturals which command most attention. From early spring Stick Flies, Damsel Flies, Buzzers and Diawl Bachs will catch from near the bottom right to the surface. These flies should be fished very slowly or static using the wind to move the flies through the water. Dries and emergers are also killers in most areas especially in the early mornings and late evenings. Cast to moving fish or just left to drift they can be deadly, but keep a keen eye on your flies and line or you'll end up with a broken leader. Boat fishing on the drift is always popular and covers large areas of lake. But fishing at anchor with teams of nymphs and buzzers fished deep and slow has been the most successful method over the past few years. Always ask the very knowledgeable staff at the Lodge where it has been fishing best and what methods and flies to use.
